John Bernard Rhimes was one of Hull's best known all-round sportsmen. Better known as Bernard Rhimes, he played cricket for Hull CC as a wicketkeeper-batsman for more than twenty years, being a regular first team member when they won Yorkshire League and Yorkshire Council in 1949 and captaining Hull No. 2 when they won the East Yorkshire Cup in 1958. He also gained Yorkshire honours.
As a footballer he played inside forward for Dansom Lane Hull Police Boys' Club, England Police Boys’ Club at Wembley and Bridlington Central. He also had a trial with Manchester United at the time of the Busby Babes.
He and his wife, Judy, also played golf at Sutton Park and Ganstead Park and captained the men’s and lady’s team respectively at Sutton Park in 1975-76 and 1981-82. Bernard Rhimes died in November 1993 aged 61.
