William Warden was born in Hessle in around 1820, and would eventually become a brewer, although he was apprenticed to a plumber and glazier. After serious issues with illnesses caused by dirty water in the town, the Corporation of Hull were looking to improve water supply. Warden believed he could extract more water from the Springhead at Anlaby. The Corporation decided to take him up on his offer and as a result, they set up a committee to investigate his claims. This was the Water Experiment Committee. After deliberation, the council decided to go ahead with Warden's suggestions but then found itself in dispute with him over payment. As a result the Warden Enquiry Committee established between October 1865 and January 1867 followed by the Warden Remuneration Committee between November 1867 and August 1871. Warden died in 1879.

Collection includes apprentice indenture, posters, newscuttings and paperwork relating to the Bill of Complaint brought by Mr Warden against The Mayor and councillors of Hull regarding work carried out at Springhead on behalf of the town.
